Woodsong Alpacas is located in Blue Ridge, Georgia (at least it will be soon) and is owned by Gail and Steve Scherer. Having lived in Marietta for 30 years, we are so excited to be moving an hour north to the beautiful mountains of Georgia. My husband, Steve, retired from Kennesaw State University where he taught mathematics and was Director of Academic Computing on campus. I have had a variety of interesting jobs including teaching math in a local middle school.

Steve is building our home himself without the help of a crew. We have been working on it for about 7 years now and are happy to say that we will probably move in this year. Knowing that we would some day have a “farm,” I began looking for animals – goats, sheep, miniature donkeys, and anything else that caught my eye. I also decided to take lessons on spinning yarn as I have always been intrigued by the process. Everything came together on the day that I signed up for spinning classes and was told to meet my instructor at Georgia Mountain Fiber in Blue Ridge. The lady there (yes, Debbie) told me that her father, Glenn Berns, had an alpaca farm and I should go visit sometime. Well, I visited the next day and the rest is history.

I starting looking on the internet for any info I could find about alpacas and more farms to visit. I contacted several and on a visit to the Fiber to Fashion event in downtown Atlanta several years ago, I met Holly Williams of Lasso the Moon Alpaca Farm. I began to spend a lot of time with Holly and her husband learning what I could about alpacas and eventually we bought our first alpacas from them. That is where our alpacas presently live while we are working on the house. I get a lot of hands-on with the animals because we co-own several animals and I am lucky enough to get to live at the farm when Holly and Courtney go out of town.

Aside from the animals, I particularly love working with the fiber. I enjoy taking classes at Lasso the Moon and I also teach a hat felting class there. Knitting, spinning, carding, felting – it’s brought me so much enjoyment. It will be a thrill to finally open my own farm store on my own farm.

Our animals include bloodlines from 4Peruvian Legacy, PPPeruvian Edelweiss, Peruvian Drambuie, PCA El Nino, PCA Hemingway, Snowmass Legacy Gold, CND Accoyo Bear Claw, and PHA Accoyo Stratosphere, among others. We take pride in our herd and our breeding choices, and we are committed to educating and mentoring our “first-time” alpaca owners as they enter the exciting new venture of alpaca ownership.
